About this ebook

Two linked Regency romances published together for the very first time!

This delightfully heartwarming duo from USA Today bestselling author Emily Larkin features one London beauty, one scarred major, one dashing lieutenant, one intrepid young lady ... and a litter of kittens.

Length: A novel and a novella totaling 99,000 words

Heat level: Two Regency romances containing mildly sensual love scenes

If you love captivating historical romances brimming with humor, emotion, and animals, then this duo is for you!

Lady Isabella’s Ogre (a novel)

Lady Isabella Knox enjoys her independence. She collects strays—dogs, kittens, runaway brides—but she has no intention of collecting a husband.

Major Nicholas Reynolds has had enough of soldiering; all he wants now is a bride … but his scarred face sends young ladies fleeing.

When a slip of Isabella’s tongue brands the major an ogre, his chances of marriage disintegrate. Determined to put things to rights, Isabella sets out to revive the major’s marriage prospects. How better than for the two of them to indulge in a make-believe flirtation? They both know it’s not real, so where’s the danger?

But Isabella is soon in over her head—and so is Major Reynolds.

Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes (a novella)

When Lieutenant Mayhew boards the stagecoach bound for Southampton he anticipates an uneventful journey. True, he’s carrying kittens, but it’s only eighty miles. What could possibly go wrong?

He’s not expecting to meet the enchanting Miss Willemina Culpepper. Nor is he expecting the kittens to be quite so good at vanishing.

Mayhew has faced many challenges in his career as a soldier. Traveling from London to Southampton should not be difficult. Except that it is.

Kittens unite these two stories. I preferred Lady Isabella's Ogre, probably as it's longer and the characters felt more rounded. It is easy to see how a casual word uttered in the wrong place could have unintended consequences and Lady Isabella does all she can to atone for her error. Harriet the young woman she rescues is a wet blanket but Lady Isabella having a strong personality balanced this. The characters in the second story are a bit too good to be true but it's a fun light read.

While Lady Isabella enjoys the social outings of the Season, she's not looking for a husband. She's has a strong sense of decency and fairness. She's mortified when a notorious gossip hears her label Major Reynolds an ogre and sets out to correct her error. This allows the h and H to become better acquainted and makes for a more believable ending. I loved the main characters - both mature and self-assured. The humor is subtle - mostly scenes involving animals and small children - which had me grinning. Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes describes a road trip in which numerous things go wrong, but mastered by our undaunted H and h, Lt. Mayhew & Miss Culpepper. The trials help prove to these two strangers the other's strength of character - and how suited they are to each other. Overall light-hearted, yet with some sobering reminiscing by both characters. The story includes some precocious cats, interesting main characters, good dialog. The depictions of the cats' (mis)behavior is great.
